1892J.R.R. Tolkien is born in Bloemfontein, RSA.
1895The family returns to England without the father.
1896The father dies; they residence in Birmingham.
1900Tolkien visits Birmingham schools.
1904Mrs Tolkien dies.
1909
1910Tolkien wins Exhibition to Exeter College.
1911Tolkien goes up to Oxford.
1913He begins the study of English Language and Literature.
1914He engages to Edith Bratt after she converts to Catholicism.
1915First Class Honours at university; recruited to Lancashire Fusiliers.
1916He marriages Edith; takes part in the Battle of the Somme in World War I, is sent home due to trench fever.
1917He begins writing on Silmarillion material; eldest son John is born.
1918The family moves to Oxford.
1924He becomes Professor of English Language; son Christopher is born; he is elected to Oxford Chair of Anglo-Saxon.
1926Group of literates, the Coalbiters, is formed.
1930sBegins work on The Hobbit; Inklings literary group is formed.
1937Allen & Unwin publish The Hobbit, or There and Back Again; Tolkien begins work on its sequel, The Lord of the Rings.
1945Tolkien is elected Professor at Oxford University.
1949He completes The Lord of the Rings.
1959Tolkien retires from his professorship.
1965A pirated version of The Lord of the Rings appears in the USA, where the book is immensely popular at universities and colleges.
1968The Tolkien family removes to Poole.
1971Edith Tolkien dies.
1972Tolkien returns to Oxford to receive honours.
1973John Ronald Reuel Tolkien dies in Bournemouth.
