Tolkien is born in Bloemfontein, RSA. 1895 The family returns to England without the father. 1896 The father dies; they residence in Birmingham. 1900 Tolkien visits Birmingham schools. 1904 Mrs Tolkien dies. 1909 1910 Tolkien wins Exhibition to Exeter College. 1911 Tolkien goes up to Oxford. 1913 He begins the study of English Language and Literature. 1914 He engages to Edith Bratt after she converts to Catholicism. 1915 First Class Honours at university; recruited to Lancashire Fusiliers. 1916 He marriages Edith; takes part in the Battle of the Somme in World War I, is sent home due to trench fever. 1917 He begins writing on Silmarillion material; eldest son John is born. 1918 The family moves to Oxford. 1924 He becomes Professor of English Language; son Christopher is born; he is elected to Oxford Chair of Anglo-Saxon. 1926 Group of literates, the Coalbiters, is formed. 1930s Begins work on The Hobbit; Inklings literary group is formed. 1937 Allen & Unwin publish The Hobbit, or There and Back Again; Tolkien begins work on its sequel, The Lord of the Rings. 1945 Tolkien is elected Professor at Oxford University. 1949 He completes The Lord of the Rings. 1959 Tolkien retires from his professorship. 1965 A pirated version of The Lord of the Rings appears in the USA, where the book is immensely popular at universities and colleges. 1968 The Tolkien family removes to Poole. 1971 Edith Tolkien dies. 1972 Tolkien returns to Oxford to receive honours. 1973 John Ronald Reuel Tolkien dies in Bournemouth.
