Book III - Chapter 6
The King of the Golden Hall

After riding through the night, Gandalf and the others arrive at Meduseld, the hall of King Theoden. The guards are alert and suspicious. They insist that all weapons are left at the door, save for Gandalf`s staff, and then permit the four companions to enter.

Theoden sits on his throne, with his niece Eowyn standing behind him and his chief counsellor, Grima Wormtongue, seated on the steps before him. Wormtongue is secretly an agent of Saruman. He has been poisoning the mind and body of Theoden, who appears frail and old. Dismayed by the wrath of Gandalf, Wormtongue is cowed. Gandalf reveals the truth to Theoden and counsels him to gather the Riders of Rohan and prepare for war. Apparently rejuvenated by the counsel of the wizard, Theoden orders the muster of his warriors. Wormtongue is sent back to Saruman.

After brief preparation, Theoden and his warriors are ready to set out. Eowyn is left as regent in Edoras, where she will oversee the evacuation of the women and children to Dunharrow, a highly defensible fortress in the mountains. Theoden and his army, accompanied by Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, set off for the fortress of Helm`s Deep.
